Requirements for a Legal Wedding in the Dominican Republic

Documents Required

• Valid passports for the wedding couple with photocopies of the photo page and the latest entries into the country
• Original birth certificates for the wedding couple
• Sworn declaration (plus one copy) by the wedding couple before a notary public to being single and eligible to marry (the Single Status Affidavit) plus one copy
• If the bride and/or groom was previously married, the divorce or death certificate (plus 2 copies) notarized and Apostille* is required
• Adoption certificate, if applicable
• Parental authorization, if applicable
• Valid passports for two or more witnesses. RELATIVES CANNOT BE WITNESSES

Other Requirements

• All documents, except the passports, must be Apostille* by the authorities of the country where they were issued if not the Dominion Republic. Canadian citizens are not required to present Apostille* documents
• All documents must be translated into Spanish by a certified translator and legalized by at the Dominican Consulate
• It is recommended that all required documents be submitted to the "Oficialía del Estado Civil" (Civil Registry Office), through the Resort's wedding specialist at least 3 months in advance
• The original and one copy of each birth certificate, must be Apostille*. If the parents names are not shown on the certificates, they have to be shown on a separate document
• The original and one copy of the Single Status Affidavits notarized in your home country must show the names as they appear on the passports. The Notary's signature must be Apostille*
• It is recommended that scanned or photocopied documents be sent (email or fax) in advance and all originals be brought to the hotel.
• The Resort's wedding specialist will ensure that your paperwork is processed correctly and papers sent to the right entities
• Please contact the wedding specialist if you have any questions and/or concerns regarding documentation
• Civil services are performed only in Spanish. The wedding specialist will translate as required
• The date and time for a civil (legal) ceremony is determined by the Justice of the Peace and subject to availability
• Legal weddings are not performed on Sundays or Public Holidays
• Passports and birth certificates must contain the same information
• The legal notarized marriage certificate, from the Justice of the Peace usually takes  3 to 4 weeks to process and will be sent to the couple
• Fees apply for U.S. citizens resident in the U.S.
• Apostille* is required for all official documents required for a legal wedding in the Dominican Republic

* When documents need to be recognized as legal in a foreign country, they’re required to go through the Apostille process, also known as authentication and legalization

Currency and Currency Exchange:

The Dominican Republic accepts all currencies, including US cash and credit cards. ATM machine and Currency Exchange is available at the resort. All money transactions in the Dominican Republic are in Dominican pesos at an extra charge. as these can change at any time.

Legal & Catholic Weddings

For legal or Catholic weddings, an additional fee of $ 550.00 USD over the cost of the chosen wedding package. Choose from:

Requirements for a Catholic Ceremony:

• The couple wishing to receive the Sacrament of a Matrimony in the Atlantic Parish in the Diocese of La Altagracia must present themselves to their parish priest where they live to begin their preparations, a minimum of 6 months in advance. The hotel is not responsible for the preparation
• The Parish will take care of the legal processes for marriage with the local Office
• Any legalities (if necessary) will be done through the Parish. The Hotel will be responsible for delivering the Certificate of Civil Marriage to the couple
• The ceremony will be performed at our Terraze overlooking the garden. It cannot be held on or near the beach, nor any place that is not suitable for the celebration of the Sacrament. This is a rule of the Church
• Consult the wedding department at the Occidental Punta Cana for a list of all documentation required to complete a Catholic marriage in the Dominican Republic
• In order to confirm the date and time of the ceremony, all required original documentation must be sent directly to the local priest at least 2 months in advance. The Priest will verify the legality of the documents and they will be returned to the couple after the celebration
• Catholic weddings are performed Monday to Saturday, the dates and times are subject to confirmation by the priest, based on his availability

Legal Weddings:

This is a ceremony officiated by a Judge of the Civil Service. Date and time are subject to the availability of the Judge. Legal weddings are not held on Sundays or holidays. The ceremony will be held in Spanish.

Requirements for civil weddings:

• Original and a copy of the Affidavit of Singleness properly notarized for the wedding couple
• The signature of the Notary must be Apostille*
• 1 original and a copy of the birth certificates (wedding couple) must be Apostille*
• If parents' names are not listed on birth certificates, please indicate them separately
• 1 photocopy of the passports for the wedding couple
• If married previously, 2 photocopies of the certificate of divorce or death, must be Apostille*
• For women, there is a waiting period of 10 months after a divorce, before remarrying
• Copies of all documentation must be sent 30 to 90 days prior to the wedding
• You must bring the originals and certified translations, with you for your wedding
• DO NOT SEND YOUR DOCUMENTS TO THE HOTEL
