]]>I recently had the pleasure of staying at this world-class hotel located in the stunning region of Krabi, Thailand. Set on a private peninsula surrounded by breathtaking limestone cliffs and crystal-clear waters, the resort offers unparalleled luxury and privacy, making it the perfect destination for intimate destination weddings, honeymoons, and discerning travelers seeking an exclusive and unforgettable vacation.
The resort features 98 spacious and beautifully appointed rooms, suites, and villas, each designed to reflect the natural beauty of the surrounding landscape. The rooms are elegantly decorated with traditional Thai accents and modern amenities, including satellite TV, Wi-Fi, and a fully stocked minibar. Each room also features a private terrace or balcony overlooking the Andaman Sea or lush gardens, providing guests with a breathtaking view to wake up to each morning.
I stayed in the Family Pavilion with Pool, It was luxurious, and one of the highlights was enjoying the private pool while monkeys played in the trees above.
Rayavadee offers an array of world-class facilities, including three restaurants, a bar, a spa, a fitness center, and a library. Guests can also enjoy a range of activities, from yoga classes and cooking classes to kayaking, snorkeling, and rock climbing. The resort also has a stunning outdoor pool surrounded by tropical gardens, perfect for lounging and soaking up the sun.
One of the more unique activities offered here is a guided climb to the Bat Cave located on the property. The climb takes about one hour.
The resort's dining options are exceptional, featuring a range of cuisines and dining experiences. The Raya Dining restaurant serves Thai and international cuisine in a stunning open-air pavilion, while The Grotto is a beachfront restaurant that serves fresh seafood and cocktails in a romantic cave-like setting. The Krua Phranang restaurant offers authentic Thai cuisine in a beautiful beachfront location.
I enjoyed the most delicious set menu dinner at The Grotto the highlight, Wagyu beef.
The resort's award-winning Rayavadee Spa is a tranquil oasis set amid lush tropical gardens. The spa offers a range of treatments and therapies, including traditional Thai massages, aromatherapy, and body scrubs. Guests can also enjoy a range of yoga and meditation classes, or simply relax in the sauna or steam room.
My Spa experience started with traditional washing of the feet, followed by a 90-minute hot stone massage that left me relaxed and calm.
Rayavadee is a world-class luxury hotel that offers unparalleled luxury, privacy, and indulgence. The resort's stunning location, exceptional facilities, and impeccable service make it the perfect destination for discerning travelers seeking a truly unforgettable vacation in Krabi, Thailand.

Check out our Q&A with Judy below!
1. How did your career in travel get started?
I have always had a passion for travel and used to go to a travel agency with all the information for flights, hotels, and everything you need to plan a trip prepared for my travel agent. They always said that they wished all their clients came in with this amount of information, so it only made sense that this led me to becoming an agent myself.
2. What tips would you give couples who are planning a destination wedding?
Think of the budget you wish your guests to pay and if anyone of importance cannot attend, think of how would you feel as this could impact the day of your wedding.
3. What are the benefits/pros of having a destination wedding or honeymoon planner?
We have firsthand information about the resorts, along with the best wedding departments to work with. We are here for you, especially if any problems arise prior to your departure, as well as during your trip. There are also many changes happening with the current global situation (COVID), and we are able to provide all the necessary information to ensure that you have the everything you need to have a seamless trip.
4. What is your favourite part about your job?
Working with the couple for many months and getting to know them is one of the best parts about my job! Also, making couples' dream weddings come to life makes everything worth it.
5. What advice would you give aspiring travel professionals?
This is not the lavish job that everyone thinks it is. You must have patience as you deal with many different personalities, from couple to their guests, so that is something to be mindful of!
6. What travel trends are you anticipating for 2022?
Micro weddings, as well as group travel with family and friends. We have all missed one another the past 15 months and spending time together while travelling is going to be one of the best ways to reconnect!
7. What are your top 3 destinations for a romantic honeymoon?
Jamaica, St.Lucia and Riviera Maya. Those are definitely at the top!
8. What was the most unique trip you have ever planned?
My son's destination wedding and honeymoon, which they only gave me 6 months to plan!
9. What was the first place you ever visited?
Florida!
10. Any trips planned for the near future? If so, where?
Yes, I have an upcoming trip to Paris, France as this has been on my bucket list for many years.
Welcome to MyWeddingAway.com Judy! Stay tuned for more Q&A, travel information, and blogs in the near future.

I recently travelled travel to Cancun November 16th, 2020.
I flew with Air Canada from terminal 1 Pearson.
Immediately I noticed less people within the terminal now due to the fact that only travelling passengers are welcome inside. Not only did I appreciate less volume of people, but immediately, it felt calmer.
There were large signs on the sliding doorways regarding the mandatory masks and only certain entrances were available.
As my duration is five weeks, I was travelling with an extra suitcase and found luggage carts outside the terminal building to use. I wiped down the handle with my disinfectant wipes, which I kept handy in my personal carry-on.
I noticed two air cleaning stations on my way to the AC check in kiosks, as well as several hand sanitizer stations. My boarding passes and luggage tags were printed here. There was one additional set of COVID screening questions.
There were ample staff to guiding us through this step and I had one personnel actually guide me through the automated luggage check in station. All went smoothly!
There was an automated temperature check station at this point. You just stand on the designated spot and look at a camera type device, which takes your temperature.
Clearing customs was a very simple process. Again, everyone appeared calm. All shoes remained on. All the other normal protocols remained the same.
All lounge areas had social distancing markers and only every other seat was available. All the food kiosks and duty-free stores were open with lots of hand sanitizer and the plexiglass barriers. It was business as usual!
Boarding of the aircraft also was organized and seamless.
I was surprised at the number of people on our flight. It was about 3/4 full.
Everyone was masked up for the entire flight both the crew and passengers. It literally was the first flight I have travelled on where there was no outbreaks of coughing, sneezing nor obviously under the weather travellers, which was very comforting as well.
I travelled in the regular (non-business) class. They announced that regular meal service there would be a modified option which consisted of a sealed plastic bag which contains a very small bottle of water, mini hand sanitizer, a couple of individual disinfectant wipes and a bag of pretzels. I like the fact there was minimal contact.
Flight attendants came by a couple of times throughout the flight to pick up any garbage.
There was no duty-free service on board.
Once we landed in Cancun, again, I noticed immediately that everyone was masked with hand sanitizer stations, signs, and floor decal reminders about their 5-feet (not 6-feet like in Canada) physical distance protocols.
Once outside the terminal, all ground transfers, and taxi drivers were wearing masks.
The TAO Akumal condo complex I stay also has all security, maintenance and cleaning staff masked up, as well as some of the owners and guests as I walk through the hallways and common areas. There’s ample spaced-out seating around the pools where no masks are required. I went to a large grocery store enroute to TAO. Everyone was giving hand sanitizer and also a temperature check before entering.
I do not have a vehicle out here. I have only been to one restaurant so far, which is within walking distance at the golf course clubhouse and signage for mask wearing as well as hand sanitizer was provided. Like most restaurants in Canada now, I scanned the QR code to review the menu. I love this new feature!
Unfortunately, due to low numbers of travellers, the three main Gran Bahia Principe Resorts are closed with the exception of the Premier section of the (Bahia Principe) Tulum Resort. The beaches, however, all remain open. I plan on walking down to one of our favourite beach grills later on my stay.
Based on my experience, I highly recommend travel during this time for those who can work around the two-week isolation period when returning to Canada.
Thank you to our client for sharing her travel experience. Questions about travelling right now? Contact us!
]]>Most Canadian couples come to us with a list of beach destinations, which often include the Caribbean, or depending on their budget, French Polynesia or the Maldives. However, there’s always one destination that we suggest during consultations, not only for its stunning beauty, but affordable luxury - Phuket, Thailand.
Phuket is Thailand’s largest island and home to pristine beaches, lavish yet affordable accommodations and delightful culinary experiences that feature everything from Southern Thai cuisine to modern international flavours from around the world.
Although beaches are what attracts most visitors to Phuket, there are a few surprises along the way that truly make this place even more magical than expected.
Here are three experiences that we recommend for your much-needed relaxing and memorable honeymoon in Phuket.
Book John Gray’s Hong by Starlight Sea Caves
A quick image search of Phuket on Google will yield thousands of photos of the iconic Phang Nga Bay - made famous by James Bond’s The Man with the Golden Gun. Most visitors will take a boat tour or longtail boat to see this popular attraction, but we recommend doing things a little different. For a truly romantic and unique experience, book John Gray’s Hong by Starlight Sea Caves adventure where you will be able to go inside Phang Nga Bay’s towering karstic islands by a kayak to explore the sea caves. The tour begins midday, timed perfectly to avoid crowds and allow you to experience a spectacular natural light show featuring your own self-made flower ‘kratong’ (small floating natural container made of flowers and leaves) drifting across brilliant bioluminescent waters.
Old Town Phuket
Phuket is home to a historic Old Town, which makes for an unexpected, yet lovely break from the beaches. Here you’ll find bright and colourful Sino-Portuguese architecture, charming cafes, modern and traditional restaurants, and trendy clothing and souvenir shops. Make sure to have your camera ready as the buildings and their vivid colours make for the best backdrops for an impromptu photoshoot that is guaranteed to leave a smile on your faces when you look back on your camera rolls.
Blue Elephant Cooking School
When you visit Thailand, there’s a good chance that you’ll fall in love with their food. The distinct blend of sweet, sour, salty, spicy, and bitter is unlike any other cuisine in the world. One of the best ways you can immerse yourself and learn more about Thai cuisine is through a cooking class. There are many cooking classes in Thailand, but one of the most well recognized schools is Blue Elephant Cooking School. There is a location in Bangkok, but the one in Phuket is situated inside an elegant governor’s home that showcases the Sino-Portguese architecture that is so uniquely Old Town Phuket. The class begins with a trip to the local market with the chef, followed by the cooking class. Students will receive a package that includes all of the delicious recipes, along with alternative ingredients, so you can bring your kitchen to life with the unique flavours of Thai cuisine when you return home.

Our recommendation? Thailand.
Earlier this week we began our blog series to highlight some of our favourite destinations in Thailand for the most perfect honeymoon. The first destination in our blog series was the buzzling and vibrant city of Bangkok, but now we’re heading somewhere slightly more serene and easy-going: Chiang Mai.
A flight from Bangkok to Chiang Mai takes about an hour and a half, but once you land, you’ll experience a world of a difference. Chiang Mai, in contrast to Bangkok, has an easy-going and relaxed vibe, but by no means is it less exciting. Chiang Mai is a cultural hub with ancient temples, a mountainous and green landscape, and home to local artists with a passion for creating unique artwork using traditional techniques.
Much like the rest of Thailand, there are a plethora of things to do in Chiang Mai, but we’re highlighting three must-do activities to inspire you for your future honeymoon to Thailand.
Spend a day at an elephant sanctuary
We can try our best to explain what it’s like being around Thailand’s gentle giants, but this is a unique experience that you can only understand once you see for yourself. One elephant sanctuary in Chiang Mai that we recommend is Patara - a safe place for elephants of all ages, including babies! Here you can book an experience that will allow you to interact with an elephant one-on-one, alongside it’s mahout (en elephant’s personal keeper). You will get to feed and bathe these magical creatures, but most importantly, you’ll get to learn about their health, well-being and historical role in Thailand’s society. It’s a humbling experience to say the least and we guarantee that it will be one of the highlights of your trip.
Due to COVID-19, it’s been difficult for elephant sanctuaries in Thailand to cover the high costs of taking care of elephants. If interested, we encourage you to support by donating or booking a voucher for future use at Patara. More information can be found here.
Night Market
Chiang Mai may be a laid-back city, but it’s one that comes alive in the evening, especially at night markets. You can visit the Night Bazaar, which is open every night, or if you’re lucky enough to be there on a Saturday, you can head over to the Saturday Night Market, which is only open on Saturdays between 4pm-11pm. You’ll pass by friendly vendors selling everything from clothing, souvenirs, jewelry and delicious fragrant street food. It’s a shopping experience like no other with unique local crafts and all moderately priced, so your wallet will be both surprised and grateful.
Chiang Mai Old City
Chiang Mai is home to a historic Old City, which you’ll recognize right away once you pass the sacred brick walls that surround it. Inside the walled city, you’ll come across ancient ruins and temples dating back to the 12th century. You’ll feel like you travelled back in time, especially when entering the historic complex that’s home to one of the Old City’s iconic temples, Wat Chedi Luang. There are also charming cafes and local shops, which are great for when you want to take a break from the heat or temples.
Want to learn more about Chiang Mai and/or Thailand? This only gives you a quick snapshot of what you can experience on your honeymoon, but if you want to learn more, book a free consultation with us, so we can help you plan and work within your budget!

Most couples in Canada dream of the Caribbean or French Polynesia for their honeymoon, but the majority almost never consider Thailand due to distance, the perception that it’ll be expensive, and overall lack of information. All reasons are valid, but some may not necessarily be true, especially with regards to cost.
That’s why, we’re doing this short blog series to cover three of MyWeddingAway.com’s favourite destinations in Thailand - Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and Phuket - to highlight some of the experiences that couples can have together for the perfect honeymoon.
Let’s start with Bangkok.
If you’re coming from Canada, chances are, you’re most likely flying to Bangkok. There are no direct flights from Canada, so yes, the journey will be long, but we like to think of your travel time as the perfect opportunity to sleep, watch movies, read a book, and rest as you prepare for the excitement of exploring a new place together.
Bangkok can be overwhelming, especially if it’s your first time, but we mean that in a good way. Your senses will be on overdrive with the sights of glittering temples contrasted by the backdrop of towering skyscrapers, the sounds of cars, people, and also undisturbed silence in sacred places, the smell of unique flavours that will make your stomach protest with hunger even after having a large breakfast, the unforgettable taste of traditional and modern dishes with a balance of sweet, sour, spicy, salty, and bitter, and the touch of unique textures from the smoothness of Thai silk to the soothing hands that sends you to a state of tranquility during a Thai massage. All of this (and more) are the reasons why you will both fall in love with Bangkok.
Here are three recommendations that we recommend for a great start to your honeymoon.
Temple Hopping
As soon as you land in Bangkok, you’ll come to realize early on that it’s a city of both old and new. There are modern skyscrapers, malls, and restaurants dotted all over the city, but there are also glittering ancient temples everywhere. Some of the must-visit temples (especially for insta-worthy photos) are: Wat Pho (the Temple of the Reclining Buddha), Wat Arun (right by the Chao Phraya River), and the Grand Palace (home to the sacred Emerald Buddha). Our recommendation is to get there early and make sure to dress appropriately - which means covering your knees and shoulders.
Michelin-Starred Dinner
Bangkok is home to 26 one and two-starred Michelin restaurants which range from a low to high price range. Whether you decide to go for the fanciest restaurant or the simplest, you’re guaranteed to have an unforgettable dining experience. We recommend visiting Thailand’s Michelin Guide and making reservations ahead of time to make sure you get a table.
Shop ‘Til You drop
Bring an extra suitcase because there's plenty of shopping available in Bangkok, ranging from local markets to luxury shopping malls. Even if you’re not much of a shopper, you’ll be tempted by the local arts and craftsmanship that you’re guaranteed not to get anywhere else. Our suggestion? If you see it and you like it, get it because you might not have the opportunity to find it again!
There’s so much more to do in Bangkok, but this is just a quick snapshot to give you an idea of what you can experience together. If you want to learn more, book a free consultation with us, so we can give you more information about Thailand and work with your budget!
Stay tuned for our next blog post of the Thailand series where we head to the North of Thailand and explore Chiang Mai!

Every detail from choosing flowers, your wedding dress, guest list, and more requires a lot of planning and attention - especially when it comes to selecting the perfect destination to host your wedding. Of course, you can research or contact the resort for information, but there is nothing like visiting the destination yourself to determine whether it is the right place for your dream wedding. This way, you can experience first-hand what the venue looks like, how comfortable the rooms are, taste the food, explore the property, beaches, and surrounding areas, and more.
If this is something that's holding you back from booking a destination, you're in luck because Iberostar has a solution for you! They have created special preview wedding packages for three of their most scenic and romantic destinations for weddings - the Dominican Republic, Mexico, and Jamaica (also our favourites)! Not only are these destinations some of our most popular places for destination weddings, but they are truly stunning and uniquely their own.
Each preview package allows you and your partner to stay at a resort of your choice, including Iberostar Selection, Coral Level at Iberostar or Grand Hotels in the DR and Mexico, as well as Grand Rose Hall in Jamaica. You will get to stay at their best available rooms and meet with onsite wedding executives, so you can get an exclusive tour of their wedding venues, learn more about their property, and ask important questions that have been weighing on you during your wedding planning process.
We can't think of a better way to experience the magic of each destination and help you choose the perfect place for you to tie the knot and begin your happily ever after.
Iberostar has also recently created their How We Care Philosophy that highlights health, safety, and hygiene measures for their guests and staff, so you can be sure that you are well taken care of and safe during your stay.

Couples, in particular, have had to cancel romantic vacations and honeymoons, which could have been really stressful and definitely sad because let’s face it, no one likes cancelling or postponing vacation. With that in mind, we decided to come up with 3 date night ideas inspired by some of our favourite destinations around the world! This won’t replace your vacation or honeymoon, but we hope it gives you inspiration and ideas for date nights while we wait to travel safely again!
Thailand
It’s no secret that MyWeddingAway.com loves Thailand. We always mention this magical destination and for good reason - it’s one of the most romantic places we’ve ever been to! For a Thai-inspired date night, consider making some delicious Thai food, like pad Thai or green curry with chicken. We have yet to meet someone who doesn’t like Thai food and we guarantee you’ll have a lot of fun cooking together. You can also try watching movies that were filmed in Thailand while you enjoy your dinner together. Some of our favourites include the Hangover II and Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason. You’ll definitely get a good laugh while watching these movies and you’ll also get a feel for this vibrant and diverse destination.
Dominican Republic
Looking for a fun and upbeat night-in? How about a romantic merengue party for two? Merengue is a style of Dominican music and dance which showcases the DR’s lively and dynamic culture! Set the mood with coconut inspired beverages and cocktails - one of the DR’s main exports and the reason why they call Punta Cana the ‘Coconut Coast’! You can also change the ambiance of your living room or backyard by decorating it with string lights and tropical fruits and plants. As soon as you turn on the music, you’ll be transported to this warm Caribbean coast and create a memorable date night together! Here’s a quick merengue tutorial for your dance party for two:
Mexico
Taco night is undoubtedly one of the best dinner ideas ever. Making tacos is not only easy and simple, but it’s also fun to assemble with friends and family. In this case, you guessed it - we’re suggesting a taco-making date night idea at home. You can either order a taco kit from one of your famous Mexican restaurants (yes, they have that now) or we suggest making everything from scratch at home. All you have to do is turn on some Mexican music, whip up some margaritas and let the taco making begin! We found this playlist on Spotify that fits this date night perfectly.

The past few months has no doubt been difficult for couples who have had to postpone or cancel their weddings due to the pandemic. However, we’re hopeful that we’re reaching the end of the tunnel and we can now resume to dreaming and planning for the future - especially now that more and more destinations are opening back up again!
Through it all, Iberostar, as well as MyWeddingAway.com understands the adversities and challenges that couples have had to go through, but we also understand that no matter what, you’re ready to say #IStillDo. While long walks on the beach and dreamy sunset dinners are still the iconic ways to spend your honeymoon or romantic getaways, we also encourage our clients to add some wellness experiences in their itinerary. Not only are they good for you, but they are a great way to have fun, try something new, and stay balanced during your vacation – and more romantic than you think!
There are so many wellness experiences to try nowadays, but we are highlighting three wellness experiences and destinations that we and our clients have loved and are excited to try when we can all safely travel again!
Thai Massages in Thailand
Thailand is an incredibly diverse destination. There are so many experiences to try – wellness included – that as soon as visitors return home, they are instantly dreaming of the day that they can come back to Thailand. While wellness experiences, such as yoga, healthy Thai cooking classes, luxury spas at affordable prices, and more are all worth experiencing in Thailand, one thing you cannot miss is a Thai massage.
Thai massages are unique because it is an ancient technique that uses yoga-like stretches or positions and acupressure to help with muscle soreness and stress release. You can get a Thai massage almost anywhere in Thailand and it is normal for visitors to go more than once during their trip because of how amazing and relaxed Thai massages make you feel. We guarantee that you and your partner will feel rejuvenated and zen after your massage.
Iberostar’s Aliveness
‘Aliveness’ at Iberostar reminds us to take care of ourselves, nature and the environment. These three pillars make up the foundation of how it feels to awaken your senses, move, and discover wellness at Iberostar properties.
There are many ways to stay active at Iberostar resorts, including yoga, running, cycling, hiking, and endless water activities, which are all done with mutual respect for the environment. Whether it is feeling the sand beneath your feet during yoga at the beach, cycling or running alongside palm trees and dense tropical plants, or swimming in clear turquoise waters, each activity aims to connect you with each other as well as nature.
Iberostar also knows how to eat well and live well with their responsibly sourced food and local produce, so you can feel confident that what you are eating and putting in your body is fresh and sustainable.
Dominican Tree House Village
Disconnect to connect at Dominican Tree House Village in El Valle, Dominican Republic. Unplug and experience nature at its finest in your very own tropical tree house with scenic views of a lush jungle.
While the main highlight of your trip will likely be your tree house villa, there are also many wellness activities to try while you are here, including hiking, biking, snorkelling, and of course, yoga. Imagine starting your day with a morning yoga session surrounded by a dense tropical forest and the sounds of nature. Sounds like a perfect way to relax your mind, body, and spirit.
The Dominican Tree House Village also believes in sustainable consumption and only serves local, fresh, and organic food so that every dining experience is also a wellness experience. Other activities you can try are ziplining, horseback riding, and a massage at their spa.
Contact us at MyWeddingAway.com to learn more about these experiences and see how you can plan a romantic wellness trip in the future!

Whether you had to postpone your wedding or are looking for advice and inspiration during this time, we recommend reading the following Q&A with Weddings Manager, Abraham Amezquita, from Barceló Maya Grand Resort for some positive words of wisdom and wedding advice!
Q: How is Barcelo inspiring people at home during this time?
We have been very active on our social media networks, inviting agents and commercial partners to learn more about our property and share our knowledge so that they can become experts, as well as calling our brides when they need it so that the trust they have for our team grows and they feel confident during this uncertain time.
Q: How do you think this pandemic will change the destination wedding industry?
A lot! This will change the way we organize events, the way of interaction, the set-ups, the food, and the timing. Everything will have to change and we will need to reinvent.
Q: We love Barceló's current hashtag #WeWillTravelAgain. What destination are you thinking of visiting when we can all travel again?
I think my hometown, where my family lives, to visit my relatives.
Q: For couples who are going through cancellations or post-poning their weddings right now, what would be the best advice you can give them at this time?
Faith. Better times will come. Postpone, continue with your dream and our team will help you and make it possible.
Q: In your opinion, where is the best spot to have a wedding in the new Barceló Maya Riviera?
The beach is the best spot in the property. It is just amazing.
Q: What was the most unique wedding you ever planned?
All of them are special and unique, but I will say personally I love south Asian weddings. The traditions, the outfits, and the meaning is something to remember.
Q: What are the benefits/pros of having a destination wedding over a local wedding at home?
The reunion of the whole family and friends you have not seeing in a while, the budget, and the celebrations is not just one day – every day is a memorable event.
Q: What are the top 3 things couples should consider before planning a destination wedding?
Number of guests, travel restrictions for country and guest, and the wedding place of course, and how affordable are the expenses for their guest.
Q: What advice would you give aspiring wedding planners and managers?
Make sure you have time to love our profession and time to adapt and rethink. We have the advantage and the love never stops or never dies.
Stay tuned for more Q&A’s in the future at MyWeddingAway.com!

We’ve said it before and we’ll say it again, Thailand is one of the most beautiful and magical places to visit for your honeymoon. Revered for its ancient ruins, historical temples, bustling cities, tranquil islands, and scenic beaches, it’s no surprise that Thailand has been recognized as one of the most sought after and captivating destinations in the world.
A quick travel search on Google will introduce you to a plethora of experiences and destinations to explore, such as Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket, and many others, all of which have been recognized globally as must-visit spots in Thailand, and for good reason (we even wrote a blog post about it). However, beyond these wonderful destinations are hidden gems that can be easily added to your itinerary, all waiting to be explored.
If you’re looking for a magical place for your honeymoon, or a romantic getaway filled with rich cultural, local, and diverse experiences, then keep reading to discover a world of unique Thailand destinations that are distinctly their own.
Sukhothai
If you’re travelling to Northern Thailand, chances are, you’re most likely there to visit the charming cultural epicentre of Chiang Mai. However, there’s a small neighbouring town with an incredible display of ancient ruins and historical temples dating back to the 13th century nearby. This place is known as Sukhothai, an awe-inspiring destination and the Kingdom’s first-ever capital city. One of the must-visit spots in Sukhothai is the Sukhothai Historical Park, a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site with an impressive array of ruins and temples. For a truly unforgettable and romantic activity, we recommend renting a bike early in the morning or in the afternoon to catch the golden sunrise or sunset descending upon the towering Buddha statues and ruins. We have no doubt that this will be one of the top highlights of your trip.
Where to stay:
Sriwilai Sukhothai
Phattalung
Next up is Phattalung, a province in Southern Thailand with a wonderful array of unique and local experiences that you won’t find anywhere else. At first glance, Phattalung may seem like a sleepy passersby province on the way to more popular and well-known islands in Southern Thailand, but a couple days in this area will unveil stunning natural beauty, distinct local experiences, and a tight-knit community dedicated to preserving old-aged traditions and crafts. One experience that cannot be missed when visiting this area is an early-morning boat ride to Thale Noi, a fresh-water lake with sprouting lotus flowers and a natural wetland that’s home to wild buffalos and migrating birds. The pinkish hues of the sunrise reflecting on the calm, clear waters of the lake will make the 5:00 a.m. wake-up call worth it.
Where to stay:
Sripakpra
Khao Sok National Park / Cheow Larn Lake
Last, but certainly not the least, is the breathtaking and otherworldly Khao Sok National Park, home to the stunning Cheow Larn Lake. Khao Sok National Park is the oldest evergreen tropical rain forest in the world, featuring dramatic limestone karst formations, vibrant emerald green lakes, hidden caves, and majestic animals, including wild elephants, monkeys, barking deers, and more. One of the highlights of visiting this area is the opportunity to stay at a floating bungalow resort, like 500 Rai or Elephant Hills, which offer floating bungalows with pristine views of the lake and outdoor sitting areas directly above the soothing waters. As this is a nature reserve, Khao Sok National Park is the perfect place to disconnect your phones and connect with each other, savouring simple moments and the beauty of nature.

This month, we had chance to talk to Joyce to learn more about her, her job as a wedding planner, and the lovely Iberostar Playa Paraiso Complex – a fantastic Mayan-inspired resort at the foot of the Caribbean!
Read our Q&A with Joyce below!
Q: How long have you been a wedding planner at Iberostar Playa Paraiso Complex.
I have 2 years as a wedding coordinator and I love it.
Q: What is your favourite part of your job?
When I see the face of the couple saying their own vows and, of course, when the officiant announces them as a husband and wife. I cannot change the happiness that they reflect. For me, that is the best moment because I'm part of their special day and I know that they will remember it.
Q: Favourite wedding ceremony location and why?
I believe that the best location to get married is the beach. All of our brides come to marry in our hotel for our beach. They see pictures, so they imagine their wedding there.
Q: Must try when visiting this property?
Our spectacular Japanese restaurant because the chef cooks in front of you and all the guests can enjoy the dinner and the show.
Q: Most memorable wedding moment?
The "I do" moment.
Q: Best colour combinations you have seen?
As we know, all of the brides have different ideas for their wedding, but I think between gold and red colours are the best combination because they look fancy. Nevertheless, all of the colours that our brides match for their wedding day looks great.
Q: What trends are you seeing for 2020?
Most of our brides are eco-friendly and they do not use plastic or decoration to harm our environment. Also, the bridesmaids are wearing mint coloured dresses and some of the wedding dresses are using are more classic.
Q: Favourite wedding flowers and why?
I love the dendrobium phalaenopsis flower because it is fancy. When the brides use it in their bouquets and matching with other flowers, the dendrobium makes the bouquet look even more gorgeous.
Q: Favourite local recipe?
Cochinita Pibil.
Q: What are you reading at the moment?
Pride & Prejudice
Q: Any New Years resolutions?
Be more aware to care for our environment.
Q: Tequila or Mescal (for Mexico)?
Of course, our tequila!!!
Q: Favourite Drink?
This is a difficult question to answer, but I think the best one is mojito.
Q: How can wedding clients give back to local communities or support environmental initiatives?
Avoiding using plastic, shells, or fake petals for decoration. To be honest, they can use different items and I am pretty sure that the wedding will look beautiful. Also, if they have excursions, please do not contaminate our beautiful tourist places. We need to preserve our common home – The Earth.

Here are our top 3 reasons why you should get started on a honeymoon registry:
1. Save, save, save!
It’s not a secret that honeymoons can be expensive, especially since you want it to be a trip of a lifetime. Setting up a honeymoon registry can help reduce expenses, whether it be for a portion of your accommodations, a diving excursion, horseback riding, and whatever else your hearts desire. With MyWeddingAway.com’s honeymoon registry, you can add whatever activity you want, which will help cut costs in the long run.
2. Meaningful Gift
Since your honeymoon registry is pretty much a list of unique excursions that you want to experience as newlyweds, it gives your guests a sense of satisfaction knowing that they’re providing you with something special: intangible moments that you will remember forever. This is one of the reasons why couples and guests prefer honeymoon registries over traditional registries. It’s almost like your guests indirectly play a part in your honeymoon and it’s something that you can connect with them about after your travels. Everyone loves sharing travel stories!
3. Bonding Time
Creating a honeymoon registry can be a lot of fun! It allows you and your partner to brainstorm ideas and create a list of things that you want to do together as a couple. A honeymoon registry is a great way for the two of you to bond over your first trip as newlyweds and dream about all of the amazing activities you can experience. The thought of creating a honeymoon registry may sound daunting, but when it’s done together, it makes it a lot more fun than you think!

Being a go-to source for destination weddings and honeymoons means it's important for us at MyWeddingAway.com to keep in touch with our fellow partners in order to help you plan the perfect wedding and getaways. That's why we're starting a Q&A series with our trusted wedding planners across our favourite hotel properties! Hopefully, their passion and insight into wedding planning and sharing information about their hotels will help you with your own destination wedding or next getaway.
We're excited to start our series with Luz Jiménez, Wedding Coordinator at Occidental at Xcaret Destination. Luz is a true expert in making wedding dreams come true in her stunning all-inclusive resort in the Riviera Maya.
Q: How long have you been a wedding planner at the Occidental at Xcaret Destination?
I have been working here for over than 8 years!
Q: What is your favourite part of your job?
I have two favorite moments. The main one is seeing all of the planning come to life on the wedding day. I love seeing the decorations, smelling the flowers, seeing the food, and watching the wedding couple dance with their guests and having a blast. The second one is when I see the brides on their wedding gown ready to walk down the aisle. After 8 years I still get emotional.
Q: What is your favourite wedding ceremony location and why?
The Mayan Ruin because of it's uniqueness.
Q: Must try when visiting this property?
Riviera Maya Cocktail.
Q: Most memorable wedding moment?
A wedding almost got cancelled due to a big snow storm. Most of the guests were coming from the Philippines with a flight connection in New York. Because of the storm, all of the flights were cancelled from the New York airport. The wedding couple took matters into their own hands and bought new flights for their family with a new connection in another city. We had to move the wedding to the next day late in the evening as they still had some guests arriving on that day in the afternoon. It was quite sad to see the wedding couple suffering and working very hard finding and buying new flights instead of enjoying their pre wedding days as all the couples normally do. They were very stressed, but at the end they made it possible. They had all their friends and family supporting them on their big day and their happy faces made it all worth it!
Q: Best colour combinations you have seen?
Blush pink and gold / Dusty blue and light yellow / Living coral and greenery.
Q: Any trends for 2020?
Geometric backdrops for the ceremony will remain, minimalist decorations, and Tuscany inspired decorations.
Q: Favourite Mexican dish and recipe?
Tacos al Pastor. Here's the recipe:
Ingredients
Step 1
In a medium saucepan, heat the 1 tablespoon of oil. Add the garlic and cook over moderately high heat, turning occasionally, until lightly browned, about 1 minute. Stir in the oregano, cumin, pepper and cloves and cook until fragrant, about 1 minute. Add the chilles and cook, stirring, until blistered in spots, about 30 seconds. Add the pineapple juice, vinegar and achiote paste and bring to a boil. Remove from the heat and let stand for 5 minutes.
Step 2
Transfer the chille mixture to a blender and puree until smooth. Season with sea salt. Scrape the marinade into a large, sturdy plastic bag. Add the pork and turn to coat. Set the bag in a small baking dish and refrigerate overnight.
Step 3
Light a grill or preheat a grill pan. Brush the pineapple and onion with oil. Grill over high heat, turning once, until lightly charred and softened, 3 to 5 minutes. Transfer to a carving board and tent with foil.
Step 4
Remove the pork from the marinade. Grill over high heat until lightly charred and just cooked through, 2 to 4 minutes. Transfer to the carving board and let rest for 5 minutes.
Step 5
Cut the pineapple, onion and pork into thin strips and transfer to a bowl. Season with salt. Serve with corn tortillas, chopped cilantro and lime wedges.
Q: Tequila or Mezcal?
I am from Oaxaca, so Mezcal definitely.

If you’re one of those people, or you’re just curious to learn more about this great destination, then check out these top 5 places to visit in the Dominican Republic.
Bayahibe
Bayahibe is a small coastal town in the Dominican Republic where visitors can enjoy a relaxing vacation by the beach while also having the option to go and explore natural wonders, such as diving sites, trekking, and more. If you’re looking for a place to stay or a venue for your destination wedding, check out Iberostar Hacienda Dominicus.
La Romana
Not too far from Bayahibe is another beautiful destination in the Dominican Republic, La Romana. This area is home to endless resort options for families, honeymooners, couples, and golfers. La Romana is also a great gateway to Altos de Chavón, a must-visit cultural site with a picturesque 16th century Mediterranean village. Consider Grand Bahia Principe La Romana for a place to stay.
Samana
The town of Samana is one of the Domincan Republic’s best kept secrets. Samana is situated in the northeast coast of the country with abundant natural beauty and pristine sandy shores. Nature lovers will love Samana’s rugged mountains, long stretches of white sand beaches, and crystal clear waters, which play host to humpback whales during mating season in the winter. Check out Grand Bahia Principe El Portillo if you want to visit Samana.
Puerto Plata
Our next Dominican Republic favourite is Puerto Plata, located on the north coast of the destination on the Atlantic side, this area is perfect for water sport enthusiasts. Cabarate, in between Puetro Plata and Sosua, is a less resort-dominated area, making it a great place for windsurfing, snorkelling, and scuba diving. All of the beaches in Puerto Plata is public, so expect an easy-going, laid-back vibe and atmosphere. Sounds like your type of destination? Check out Iberostar Costa Dorada for a place to stay.
Punta Cana
Our last Dominican Republic destination is one you’ve probably heard of before -- Punta Cana. Don’t let its popularity discourage you from visiting this iconic destination. Punta Cana has gained recognition as one of the best places to visit in the Caribbean due to its romantic beach settings, affordable, yet luxurious resorts, and world-class golf courses. Time and time again, travelers are drawn to Punta Cana for their honeymoon, wedding, and vacations. If you want to learn more about Punta Cana and where to stay, click here. If you've been following MyWeddingAway.com, then you probably know Karen Lantigua. She is the girl boss behind MyWeddingAway.com and considers herself, not only a destination wedding and honeymoon travel professional, but also a lover of all things travel and even a skilled cocktail connoisseur (just ask her and she’ll tell you!).
With over 90 destinations and counting under her belt, it would only be fitting to ask Karen about her passion for travel and how it led her to creating such a successful business as a travel professional.
Check out these fun travel questions with Karen!
Q: Where is the first country you’ve ever travelled to and how did this spark your love for travel?
The first “vacation” that I took was with my family at about the age of 16. We went to Mexico to an all inclusive, I had been to the US before and Scotland but this was the first “resort” we had gone too. It was to a place called Los Angeles Locos on the pacific ocean in Manzanillo, Mexico... What a great experience we had, beautiful sunsets, crashing surf, horseback riding every day, nightly shows and the disco, oh what fun. We counted each day that past and were so sad to leave. I was hooked.
Q: You’ve been a travel professional for over two decades and have been to over 90 destinations in the world. Can you name your top 3 favourite destinations that you’ve been to and why?
This is such a hard question to answer. I have loved so many places and they are all so different from each other. I cannot really pick three, but here are three of my favorites, number one, Thailand.
Thailand is very unique, there is so much to see and it's fairly easy to get around. I love the culture, the food, the beaches, the art, the mountains, the shopping the spas. Something is always calling me back to see more. I have had some of the most incredible experiences in Thailand, including zip lining, elephant sanctuaries, cooking classes... One of my favorite tours was John Grey Hong by Starlight Sea Kayak tour.
Number two, the Greek islands. I loved traveling there. I did a 4-night cruise that disembarked in Santorini. Santorini is one of those magical places on the planet that gives you an indescribable feeling. From Santorini, I hopped on and off ferries visiting different islands... some just small fishing villages while others with bustling ports and ancient cities steeped in history. My favourite memory was in Mykonos, sipping a cold drink and eating fresh calamari with the sun setting.
Number three, the Dominican Republic. I have travelled extensively in this beautiful country that has the highest mountain ranges in the Caribbean, rain forests, incredible beaches and natural beauty.
I have experienced some amazing things in the DR, like white water rafting in Jarabacoa, canyoning and repelling a 130-foot waterfall and horseback riding in some of the most amazing country side. Catamaran excursions with the sails full out and riding the waves with flying fish springing from the ocean, playing in the big surf of Playa Grande to exploring Las Terrenas and Samana on ATV and horseback. It's not all beaches and all-inclusives in the DR.
Q: Have you lived and worked anywhere else outside of Canada? If so, where and how was it like living in that destination?
I have lived in Hong Kong, Thailand and the Dominican Republic.
Hong Kong was a great place to live and work because there's always something going on, like shopping, dining and nightlife. One of the most incredible city skylines anywhere. You can view it from the top of the peak mountain or from anywhere in Hong Kong Habour. It's breathtaking. Don't forget it's surrounded by 263 islands with gorgeous beaches and fishing villages.
Q: Being in the destination wedding planning and honeymoon space, you probably have your fair share of the most romantic destinations to visit. Can you name the most romantic place you’ve been to this year?
The most romantic place I have been this year is the Anantara Rasananda Koh Phangan Villas in Thailand.
To start you arrive by speed boat right on to the beach where staff are waiting to greet you. Each suite has its own pool and range from private garden views to ocean views. The meals are also delicious and they have an incredible spa. Just watch this video in the gallery and see for yourself.
When it's time to leave, you depart the same way you arrived and the staff wave good-bye to you from the shore until you are far off in the distance. I cannot get his place out of my mind. I'm going back for sure.
Q: Where is somewhere you have NEVER been before and would like to go?
I would just like to go on an extended trip around the world with no hard schedule. Just stay somewhere until I want to leave it and come home when I feel done. Here are some of the places that I would like to visit on that adventure: Peru, Spain, India, Africa, Vietnam, Philippines, and New Zealand.
Q: Are you planning to go anywhere this year? If so, where?
Thinking about Costa Rica and going back to Thailand. Maybe a sailing adventure.
Q: What do you love the most about being a travel professional, especially in the wedding planning and honeymoon space?
Seeing the wedding photos after its all done. I get emotional sometimes. I have been talking to this bride and groom for up to two years and feel like I get to know them.
Q: What are some tips that you would like to share with anyone who would like to turn their passion for travel into a business (or even any passion into a business)?
Make a plan, and just do it. Find a niche that you have an interest in and build your business from there. I can certainly help anyone interested in finding out more information about how to get started or even how to join our Destination Wedding team.
Q: Last question. Aisle or window seat?
Aisle, please. I like to straighten my legs and get up whenever I feel like it. Long haul I may consider a window, something to lean on and look out of.

This is perfect for the bride who likes to sip (duh), and works great with medium to smaller parties. Have a wine expert or sommelier teach the group how to taste and pair wines at home, a wine bar, restaurant or vineyard/winery. To make the event extra personal, choose a theme for the wine: Try all vintages from the year the couple started dating or wines from wherever the couple is going on their honeymoon. But maybe skip this theme if you have underage guests (like the bride's 17-year-old sister), pregnant wedding party members or nondrinkers so no one feels left out.
This theme is recommended for any to-be-wed who considers herself a foodie or wants to get more comfortable in the kitchen. It's also awesome for a coed couples shower. Bring your party to a cooking class or hire a chef to show you the ropes at home (just make sure you have enough space and equipment). See if any restaurants near you offer cooking classes or chefs that make house calls. Read More...

]]>Watch any classic wedding movie (especially Father of the Bride), and you'll soon understand why destination weddings are so popular. They're almost guaranteed to be simpler (and faster!) to plan than a traditional wedding and reception for two main reasons:
Honeymoon-happy resorts and cruise lines around the world have made it easier and more appealing to wed on-site. Many have full-time wedding coordinators on staff who are familiar with that country's marriage license requirements and offer wedding packages that take care of all your ceremony essentials (photographer, cake, officiant and so on.). Why get hitched here: Take your pick from 800 miles of super-fine sandy beaches for your nuptials. The Dominican Republic's most popular destination, Punta Cana, is also home to some of the best beaches in the world. In addition to its long list of all-inclusive resorts offering wedding packages and planners, Punta Cana's over 20-mile coast is lined with coconut palms and bordered by warm cerulean waters (aka an idyllic ceremony backdrop). For something a little less populated, check out the beaches of the north and northeast coasts. The DR (as it's casually called) is also the largest producer of cigars in the world, making for easy favors or a fun cigar-rolling station.
When to wed: The nice thing about the DR is that it averages 78 to 82 degrees year-round, making it a warm-weather wedding destination anytime. Read More...

]]>However, with the assistance of an experienced destination wedding planner, you can skip the mistakes and book the destination you desire with the best reception halls, wedding scenes, and hotels around. These specialized wedding planners understand your needs and know what is required (regarding permissions, deposits, and bookings) to fulfill your requests.
To help you avoid some basic mistakes and mishaps before getting married far away from home, the destination wedding experts at MyWeddingAway.com have put together a list of the most common mistakes people make when booking their destination wedding.
1. Thinking you can do it all on your own. Your wedding day is the most important day in your life and planning this occasion can take a lot out of you, so it’s best to leave the preparations to the professionals. It will be a big mistake if you think you can manage everything on your own for a destination wedding. At best, you may get the same quote, but you wouldn’t have the benefit of organized services from a professional.
2. Not working with a professional. Hosting a destination wedding is a specialized affair, which needs a professional. A travel agent may help with group travel bookings, but choosing them over a professional destination wedding planner would be a mistake. We have helped many couples who made group travel bookings with travel agents that do not specialize in destination weddings. Moreover, it was only after the bookings were made that they found out that there were no available wedding days at their preferred location, and the reception location was also not available at the resort they chose.
3. Not making a group booking. A huge mistake is not making a group booking! When you are planning a destination wedding, you want to make sure that all your guests will be there and the hotel will be available. At times, people see a sell-off price for a flight or a hotel at their destination and keep waiting thinking that they will get the same price for all their guests. They don’t realize that sell-off rates are for left-over inventory. They aren’t for forty seats and twenty rooms you need.
Not to mention, many hotel names are often similar, and dates can easily get mixed up, which may cause your guests to make an error while making their bookings. Also, any of the booking perks like complementary passengers, free seat selection, future travel vouchers or credits will not be offered when booking later. We will always advise our clients to book early and save themselves all the trouble, which can happen at the last moment.
4. Choosing a planner by price only. There is a lot of work that goes on behind the scenes for not only finding you the perfect destination wedding location, but also managing all the details, flights, guest requests, legal entry requirements, and relationships with you and your guests. You want to have the best person possible to work for you and take care of everything even when things go wrong. You would be doing yourself a disservice if you merely go by price and find a cheap wedding planner. We have years of experience, and we will never let you down while managing your needs and planning your destination wedding.
5. Choosing the cheapest option for your guests. We understand that you are trying to save your guests’ money. However, the cheapest option is not always the best because ultimately you get what you pay for. When we have a consultation with a new couple, we ask many questions to offer only the best value destination that meets their criteria. You ultimately are the one making the final decision of where your guests are spending their hard earned dollars and vacation time. More often than not the difference between just an okay experience and an excellent time is not thousands of dollars, so choose a good product for them and have happy guests and a memorable time with everyone.

If you’re planning a destination wedding, you need an experienced professional. To help you find the best one, here’s a list of the Top Five Things To Look For When Hiring A Destination Wedding Planner.
1. Someone who will save your energy.
The most important reason to hire a destination wedding planner is to help you save your time, money and frustration. They must be able to consult you right away about the different destinations, hotels, resorts, and venues that are available on your special day and meet your criteria, well within your wedding budget. Essentially they must be capable of saving you countless hours looking for information around.
2. Experience.
With an increasing number of options for hotels and destination wedding venues available in today’s times, it seems easy to plan your wedding on your own. However, what actually sets a successful destination wedding planner apart is their expertise and experience working in the travel and destination wedding market with the right industry connections to make sure the most important day in your life goes as planned.
3. Disaster management plans.
You sure would not want anything to go wrong on your special day. However, as a precaution, check the backup plans that the destination wedding planner has if things do go wrong. They must be capable of dealing with natural disasters - hurricanes, earthquakes, volcanic ash, fires, or the latest travel advisories - Zika, Swine Flu, state of emergency, etc., and have safe plans to move whole groups to a different hotel or destination.
4. Add on services.
Make sure that the destination wedding planner is not just a jack of all trades, but a one-stop shop for destination weddings, with all its different layers. They should not only provide you with recommendations for the travel aspect but also, off-site wedding venues, excursions and activities, invitations, unique ideas, photographers and much more.
5. Knowledge.
Last but not least is the knowledge your destination wedding planner possesses. They must continuously be educating, upgrading their knowledge and skills, through educational programs, certifications and most importantly visiting the places they sell so that they can see firsthand what you and your guests are going to see and experience.

]]>I look forward to sharing my story. I hope that you will enjoy getting to know me better.
Twenty years ago in the Dominican Republic, I was the onsite wedding planner for a tour operator from the UK. I loved this position but had to return to Canada. I then worked in the travel industry for many years and occupied different roles. I was a reservation agent for a tour operator, travel agency manager, corporate BDM, educational and group travel specialist.
It has always been a dream to start my business, and I knew it would have something to do with weddings. As destination weddings were becoming popular in Canada, I decided to start MyWeddingAway.com. It’s been ten years since I’ve started my business, and I still love what I do.
Over the past couple of years, I have noticed a lot of change. There are now more options for hotels and destination wedding venues, and the quality of décor is much more amazing. We are busier than ever but limit how many weddings we handle each year so we can still provide excellent service.
I love speaking to people about travel. I get to talk not only to the wedding couple but all of their guests and family members too. One of my favorite things is when a couple comes back from their dream wedding and shares photos and describes their wedding day. To see their happiness and be a part of their special day makes me feel fantastic!
I am committed to providing superior service in every aspect of our customer’s experience. I run my business on values of honesty, kindness, accountability, inspiration, and care and attribute my success to my tenacity.
When I am not at work, I travel, travel and travel some more. However, tourism is a growing epidemic, so it is important to respect local cultures and environments while globetrotting. Take nothing but pictures and leave nothing but a footprint. Apart from my passion for weddings and traveling, I can also make a mean martini.
I have enjoyed sharing my story about the things which matter to me and how they influence the way I do business.
